January

I did it!! A New Years Day dip in the sea!

The first of my series of challenges raising money for the lullaby trust.

New Years Day, 10:15 am and I arrived at the Salthouse pub in Clevedon, on the side of the marine lake, getting quite nervous... After getting caught up in the fun on New Years Eve, I was running on less than 5 hours sleep and not looking forward to jumping in to the water!

The theme for the dip was "The Wrong Trousers" and there were some very entertaining outfits being assembled....
I heard someone mentioning that the sea was at about 5 degrees, much colder than the 12 I had swum in before (in a wetsuit!).
Just before 11, we all came outside for some photos and then paraded down to the seafront.

We were then instructed to grab a member of the public to join in Auld Lang Syne with us, although (obviously) no-one knew the words!

And then it was time!! We walked down to the seafront and along the wall at the side of the marine pool.
After a countdown from 10, about half of us dived in and the others went in using the steps.

I dived in, and it was a shock!!! The water was so much colder than anything I had been in before and it felt like the whole of the outside of me was freezing. The man next to me declared his hangover had been fixed instantly!

I was obviously looking pretty cold, as I was advised by a woman in a flowery bathing cap that I should get out before I got too cold if I wasn't used to the water. She was swimming as if she was in the Med!

I had recommended that people sponsor me per minute I remained in the water, but after about 2 and a half my fingers were starting to prickle, and I was losing the feeling in the rest of me so I went towards the steps to get out. I was then encouraged by a photographer to remain in the water and join a group of people for a photo, so I just about managed to hold it together until he was done and then climbed out. In total I managed three minutes in the water before getting out.

We had all had bags of clothes brought down to the seafront for us, so I grabbed my bag, wrapped myself in a towel and posed triumphantly in front of my parents!

I then realised how cold I was and the shivering began... Even after changing into 3 layers of dry clothes back in the hotel, and a hot chocolate, I was still shivering enough to be shaking the table we were sat at! My legs had also turned rather blotchy....

Now I'm back at home and have finally warmed up - please remember to donate here to get my fundraising year off to a good start!

As a final note, the BBC, ITV and the Bristol post have some great photos of the dip!

What am I doing?

In 2015, I plan to do a series of challenges to raise money for the charity "The Lullaby Trust" (formally FSID).

The aim is that all of these will be very difficult to do, and will take me way outside my comfort zone! I am open to suggestions, so if you can think of a way to improve a challenge, or just come up with something new then get in touch. I'll be blogging as I go along, so you can check my progress. But please don't forget to donate! I want to raise as much money for this excellent charity as possible.
Currently, I'm looking at about one challenge per month and here is a brief idea of what I have let myself in for...

January: I'm looking for a New Years Day swim - somewhere chilly (obviously!).

February: Stand up comedy! Come and laugh (preferably with, not at) me at the Birmingham rep on the 2nd February for my 8 minute set and hope I'm not too awful…

March: I think I'm going to do the obstacle course race, the "Nuts Challenge" along with some other Lullaby Trust supporters!

April: ETU long distance duathlon (if I get selected by GB!) A 15km run, then 60km bike then a 7.5km run. This takes place on the continent, so if I find a crazier continental challenge that I can do on the way back then I'll go for it!

May: Kat and I will be heading out to Iceland to do the Original Mountain Marathon (OMM) - 2 days of running, orienteering and camping in some pretty harsh terrain.

June: 3 peaks or LE2JoG, depending on who I can find to join me!

July: American challenge. I'm in Boston for a conference in July, so I plan to find an all-american challenge to complete while I'm out there. Competitive hot dog eating anyone? If anyone can find a stair climb race, that would be a winner...
This might also be a month to attempt an open water swimming challenge from Dunbar, near Edinburgh, as I'm in the process of finding a suitable route and support vehicle.

August: Midnight man. Not content with doing a half ironman – this one happens at night-time!

September: Man vs Mountain. This epic challenge starts with a run up Snowdon, followed by an obstacle course, a vertical kilometre, an abseil (and I’m terrified of heights!!) and then a swim across a river before a final obstacle course before the finish.

October: 1/2 marathon with Zoe?

November: Still open for ideas...

December: Definitely something xmas themed, but details to be decided!

Why?
The Lullaby trust (http://www.lullabytrust.org.uk/) is a charity that provides specialist support for bereaved families, promotes expert advice on safer baby sleep and raises awareness on sudden infant death. I had a twin sister, Isobel, who died of cot death when we were very young, and so this charity means a lot to me. To donate, go to www.justgiving.com/RADCC2015/
